Advisory to not share Aadhaar photocopy withdrawn

New Delhi: The Centre on Sunday withdrew the advisory warning citizens not to share Aadhaar photocopy and suggesting to provide only masked versions of their Aadhaar cards with organisations in order to prevent its misuse.

The Bengaluru Regional Office of UIDAI had issued the earlier advisory after an attempt to misuse a photoshopped Aadhaar card and it is no longer effective, the government said.

The release had advised the people not to share photocopies of their Aadhaar with any organization because they can be misused. Alternatively, a masked Aadhaar which displays only the last 4 digits of Aadhaar number, can be used, it said.

"Please avoid using a public computer at an internet cafe/kiosk to download an e-Aadhaar. However, if you do so, please ensure that you delete all the downloaded copies of e-Aadhaar permanently from that computer," the release had also said.

The Centre on Sunday withdrew the advisory with immediate effect, citing the possibility of misinterpretation.

Aadhaar card holders have been advised to act with normal prudence in using and sharing their UIDAI Aadhaar number.

The previous advisory had gone viral on social media with many users claiming that most organisations would not conduct verification without a physical copy of the Aadhaar card.
