Sanath Jayasuriya thanks 'big brother' India for helping Sri Lanka in crisis

Colombo/IBNS: Sri Lankan cricket legend Sanath Jayasuriya thanked India calling it "big brother" for helping his country which is battling the worst economic crisis.

Jayasuriya said as quoted by NDTV, "As a neighbour and a big brother of our country, India has always helped us. We're grateful to the Indian government and PM Modi.

"For us, it is not easy to survive because of the current scenario. We hope to come out from (of) this with the help of India & other countries."

India has supplied 270,000 MT fuel to its neighbour Sri Lanka so far.

Ships carrying the diesel and petrol supplied under the Indian credit line berthed at Sri Lankan ports on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka has been witnessing massive protests due to the fuel and food shortage and the long hours of electricity cuts.

The country's economy was already tumbling since the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic.

A group of university lecturers and professors held a protest against the government on Wednesday.
