New Delhi/IBNS: Amid the growing concerns over the Omicron variant of coronavirus, the Indian government has decided to defer the resumption of international flights starting December 15 and announced Wednesday that a decision will be taken later.

“In view of the evolving global scenario with the emergence of new variants of concern, the situation is being watched closely in consultation with all stakeholders and an appropriate decision indicating the effective date of resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services shall be notified in due course,” said an order from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

However, international flights under the air bubble agreement will continue.

Earlier, India had said international flights will resume as the coronavirus cases dropped across the world.

However, the emergence of the new variant - Omicron - forced the government to issue new travel guidelines to and from 'at risk' countries where the infections linked to Omicron were detected.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, however, at a later date asked the authorities to review decsion to resume the international flights as WHO classified it as a variant of concern.
