Mumbai: SIT to probe Saki Naka rape-murder case

Mumbai/UNI: The city police on Saturday formed a special Investigation team to probe the case of Nirbhaya-like rape and murder at Saki Naka area of Andheri in north-west Mumbai.

Addressing a news conference here, city police commissioner Hemant Nagrale said beside formation of SIT, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackery has directed to institute fast-track court for trial.

After the woman succumbed during treatment this morning, police have converted section 307 to 302 of Indian Penal Code.

Probe have revealed there was only one person involved in the crime, Mr Nagrale further said and added that he has been arrested and remanded into police custody until September 21.

A 32-year-old woman was raped and brutally assaulted inside a parked tempo in Sakinaka area of Andheri (east) on intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

She had sustained serious injuries as a rod was inserted in her private parts by the accused.

She succumbed at Rajawadi Hospital in eastern suburb of Ghatkopar after battling for her life for 33 hours.

Police have arrested accused Mohan Chavhan and detained two others in connection with the heinous crime.
