Agartala/IBNS: The political tension in Tripura has further heightened after Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his party colleagues were Wednesday booked for allegedly obstructing police from discharging their duties.

Apart from Abhishek, TMC MLA Bratya Basu, Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, former Sunamura MLA Subal Bhowmik and ex-Tripura Minister Prakash Das have been booked.

The action stems from a confrontation between the TMC leaders and police at Khowai Police Station Sunday.

The confrontation took place while Abhishek and others camped at the police station protesting against the arrest of 14 TMC leaders and workers in the state.

Slamming the action, Ghosh tweeted, "Wrongly cases have been filed against Abhishek, Bratya, Dola, me and Subal da for standing beside TMC workers. The BJP is scared."

The political slugfest between the TMC and Tripura's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) started last week after the former's three youth leaders- Debangshu Bhattacharya, Sudip Raha and Jaya Dutta- were allegedly attacked by the saffron party workers and supporters in Dhalai district.

Later, 14 TMC workers and leaders including Debangshu, Sudip and Jaya were arrested for violating COVID-19 norms.
