Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi Assembly has passed a resolution opposing the appointment of of former CBI officer Rakesh Asthana as the new chief of Delhi Police, according to media reports.

The resolution asked the Union Home Minister to reverse the appointment of the Commissioner of Delhi Police, which is under the control of the ministry, said an NDTV report.

The appointment was made three days before Asthana's retirement.

The ministry in an order on Tuesday evening said that his service is extended for one year "in public interest".

The order stated that Asthana was given an "inter cadre deputation" from the Gujarat cadre to AGMUT and his service was being extended "initially for a period of one year beyond the date of his superannuation... as a special case in public interest".
