Assam-Mizoram border clash: Himanta govt announces 3-day mourning, compensation to slain officers

Guwahati/IBNS: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Tuesday announced a three-day mourning and Rs. 50 lakh as compensation to the police officers killed and one lakh to the injured in a border clash that broke out between his state and Mizoram.

Sarma said, "(I have) paid my tributes to the five martyred Assam Police bravehearts and visited SMCH to enquire about the health status of our injured personnel. Also reviewed the law and order situation in Silchar."

The clash, which broke out Monday, claimed at least five policemen and injured 60 others.

The border conflict has its genesis from the "improper border demarcation".

Two border notifications were issued between the two states during the British rule in India.

Mizoram, which was a part of Assam earlier, became a union territory in 1972 and later a state in 1987.

Blaming the neighbouring for the fresh conflict, Sarma has posted a video on Twitter suggesting Mizoram "escalated the issue".

The Assam Chief Minister tweeted, "Look at this video to know how personnel of Mizoram Police acted and escalated the issue. Sad and horrific!"

Commenting on the issue, Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, said in the Lok Sabha, "As per available information, there are boundary disputes arising out of demarcation of boundaries and claims and counterclaims over territories between Haryana-Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra-Karnataka, Assam-Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Nagaland, Assam-Meghalaya and Assam-Mizoram.

"Occasional protests and incidents of violence are reported from some of the disputed border areas."

Congress spokesperson Sushmita Dev, who is from Assam, tweeted, "Situation at #AssamMizoramBorder is extremely serious. Assam CM & Mizoram CM are giving statements but there’s no resolution. It is extremely unfortunate that HM comes to NE but does not resolve this. NEDA has totally failed. We demand immediate intervention by HM of India."

Slamming the BJP-led central government, Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, tweeted this morning, "Shocked & Stunned to hear about the ruthless violence that has transpired at the #AssamMizoramBorder. My condolences to the bereaved families. Such unremitting incidents under @BJP4India's watch have invited the death of democracy in our nation. INDIA DESERVES BETTER!"
