Guwahati: Four-time Congress MLA of Assam’s Mariani constituency Rupjyoti Kurmi on Friday resigned from the party and all set to join the BJP on June 21.

43-year-old Kurmi had tendered his resignation to Assam assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary at his assembly office in Guwahati.

Rupjyoti Kurmi said he also sent his resignation letter to Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and will join the BJP party on June 21.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has expelled Kurmi for his anti-party activities.

Kurmi who is a tea tribe community leader has been elected to the Assam assembly from Mariani constituency since 2006.

Hitting out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Rupjyoti Kurmi said that, when Rahul Gandhi entered into the party, the Congress party is in bad shape across the country.

“When Rahul Gandhi was not in the party and Sonia took the leadership of the party in 2003, then an atmosphere was created for the Congress in the country. In 2004 the Congress party came into power at the centre in 2004. But the Congress party is in bad shape across the country since Rahul Gandhi has come,” Rupjyoti Kurmi said.

On the other hand, another Congress leader Juri Sarma Bordoloi also quit the party.
