West Bengal observes Rabindra Jayanti

Kolkata/UNI: Amid mellifluous songs and captivating poems, West Bengal along with the rest of the country on Sunday observed the 160th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda paid rich tributes to the great poet and writer on the occasion.

Taking to his tweeter handle, the Prime Minister said, “On Tagore Jayanti, I bow to the great Gurudev Tagore. May his exemplary ideals keep giving us strength and inspiration to build the India he dreamt of.”

The governor in a tweet said, “Tribute to the composer of NATIONAL ANTHEM, great philosopher & writer, Nobel Laureate, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Homage to Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore on his 160th birth anniversary. May his ideals be the guiding force in all our endeavours.”

Union Home minister Amit Shah tweeted, "Knowledge and Philosophy's luminary Gurudev Tagore with his multi-faceted personality illuminated the success of Indian culture across the world. On the other hand, he also shaped the national consciousness with his brilliant ideas and gave a new direction and momentum to the freedom movement.”

BJP president said, “My humble tributes to one of the greatest thinker of India, Gurudev Rabindranath Thakur Ji on his Jayanti. Gurudev is an inspiration to all of us & his thoughts will continue to guide us to fulfil the vision of 'Sonar Bangla'. BJP will do everything to live up to his ideals.”

Rabindra Jayanti is a cultural celebration to mark the birth anniversary of one of the most celebrated litterateurs in the world.

Born to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, Rabindranath Tagore was also referred to as ‘Gurudev’, ‘Kabiguru’, and ‘Biswakabi’.

Celebrated annually and globally on May 7, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated on the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh.

Gurudev became the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. He was bestowed with this coveted honour after the publication of his acclaimed collection of poems, Geetanjali.

Tagore wrote the national anthems of two countries, India and Bangladesh, “Jana Gana Mann” and “Amar Shonar Bangla”.
