Dragon Fruit Gujarat renames dragon fruit as 'Kamalam', CM Vijay Rupani says 'nothing political'
Gandhinagar/IBNS: The Gujarat government on Tuesday renamed the dragon fruit as "Kamalam" in the state, media reports said.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani cited the outer shape of the fruit as the reason behind the renaming.
The outer shape resembles lotus, the CM said.
Rupani said in a press interaction, "We have applied for the patent of the dragon fruit to be called kamalam. But as of now, the Gujarat government has decided to call the fruit as kamalam."
"The name of dragon fruit is associated with China and we have changed it," he added.
In Sanskrit, the word Kamalam means lotus, which is interestingly the symbol of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
However, Rupani denied any link between the renaming and politics.
"Even though the fruit is known as dragon fruit, it doesn't sound appropriate. The word kamalam is a Sanskrit word and the fruit does have the shape of the lotus, so we have decided to call it kamalam, and there's nothing political about it," the CM said.
