Srinagar/IBNS: The fierce encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian left four terrorists killed and one of them surrendered to the security forces in a rare incident on Friday.

Police said two of the terrorists killed were involved in the kidnapping and killing of a panchayat member affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The encounter took place after a tip-off about the presence of militants following which troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Kiloora, Shopian.

During the gunfight, four terrorists were killed, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said.

The encounter took place hours after the body of panchayat member Nisar Ahmad Bhat was found in an apple orchard.

Bhat was kidnapped by terrorists 10 days ago.

"We have killed the terrorists involved in the killing of a panchayat member. Encounter took place soon after his body was found today," Vijay Kumar, IGP Kashmir told media.

"One terrorist surrendered. We have taken him into custody and he will be dealt with as per law," an officer told media.

Additional security forces were rushed there and deployed in the adjoining areas to prevent any law and order problem.
