New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Friday pulled up the Delhi government over the "horrendous, horrific and pathetic" Covid-19 situation in the national capital besides terming the situation in three other states- Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal- as "grim", media reports said.

Slamming the Delhi government for its kind of handling of Covid patients, the Supreme Court said as quoted by NDTV, "COVID-19 patients are treated worse than animals. In one case, a body was found in the garbage. Patients are dying and nobody is there to even attend to them."

It added, "The situation in Delhi is horrendous, horrific and pathetic. (There is a) very sorry state of affairs in its hospitals that aren't giving due care and concern to the bodies. Patients' families aren't even informed about deaths. Families haven't been able to attend the last rites too in some cases."

The union territory of Delhi, one of the worst-hit cities, has so far reported 34,687 positive Covid cases.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said the Covid tally in the national capital may touch 5.5 lakh by the end of July.

The top court has also asked the Delhi government to explain the lowering of the number of testing at a time Chennai and Mumbai have increased the daily testing from 16,000 to 17,000.

The court has also sought a response from Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal as well as the central government taking note of the reports of improper handling of patients and the disposal of the deceased in the country.

A video of an incident in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district, where the dead body of a middle-aged man was picked up and dumped into a garbage van by three municipal workers, went viral on Thursday.

The deceased was later identified as Mohammed Anwar, a 45-year old man.

Following the incident, the state government suspended seven employees including three policemen and four Nagar Palika personnel.
