New Delhi/IBNS: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi has sought an intervention of the Supreme Court in the matter of atrocities against elephants in Kerala in the wake of the killing of a pregnant elephant in Mallappuram.

In an interview with ANI, Maneka has expressed her anger against the fact that the top court didn't hear any case related to the elephant atrocities for over a decade.

"Since we had approached regarding the said case, 11,000 elephants have died so far... How many elephants should be killed before the Supreme Court  hear this matter," she questioned.

"It is not an incident. It is a murder. A pregnant elephant was fed a pineapple filled with bomb that exploded its mouth. Malappuram is very famous for incidents like this. It is the most violent district in the whole of India," Maneka Gandhi told ANI.

"It is not only the killing of elephants that Malappuram is famous for. The panchayat throws poison at random on the road so that hundreds of birds and dogs die at one time. They will hit women and there have been political conflicts in which they have cut off people's arms. It is an extremely violent area and the government of Kerala has taken no action at all. It seems like they are scared of them," she said.

Maneka felt the forest secretary and the minister for wildlife protection must immediately resign holding the responsibility of the criminal act which took place on May 27.

Besides targeting the Kerala government, Maneka has targetted Congress MP from Kerala's Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi, over the incident.

Maneka has questioned her nephew Rahul for remaining silent even after such an incident took place in his own constituency.

UPDATE: Later it was found the entire incident happened in Kerala's Palakkad district and not in Malappuram district

In a brutal instance of animal abuse, a pregnant elephant in Kerala died after she ate a pineapple full of firecrackers offered to her by some locals.

Disturbing visuals showed the elephant dying slowly while standing in water in northern Kerala's Malappuram district.

The wild elephant had left the forest and traversed into a nearby village in search of food.

As she walked down the streets, she was offered the pineapple full of crackers by locals.

The cracker reportedly exploded inside her mouth causing grave injury inside and to the tongue.

Following this, the elephant reportedly walked around the town in pain and hunger. However, she was unable to eat anything.

The elephant eventually walked up to the Velliyar River and stood there. It was then photos were taken of her gradual death there.

The incident sparked protests from several people belonging to different walks of lives, who demanded action against those responsible.

Ensuring actions will be taken, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said "justice will prevail".
