Three lakh people evacuated in the wake of Cyclone Amphan: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata/IBNS: A day before severe cyclonic storm Amphan is likely to make its landfall between Digha in West Bengal and Hatiya islands in Bangladesh, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that three lakh people have been shifted to cyclone shelters in the coastal districts as a precautionary measure.

"We have evacuated three lakh people from four coastal districts of Bengal— 2 lakh from South 24 Parganas, 50,000 from North 24 Parganas, 40,000 from East Medinipur and 10,000 from West Medinipur," Mamata Banerjee said during a presser at state secretariat at Nabanna.

"Besides 19 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, 15 teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to the coastal areas while we are monitoring the entire situation live from our control-room at Nabanna," Banerjee said.

The Chief Minister also shared the cyclone helpline numbers, which are — 033-2214-3526/1995 and 1070 (toll free).

According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)'s latest update, super cyclone Amphan likely to cross West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts between Digha in West Bengal and Hatiya Islands in Bangladesh BD, close to Sundarbans, during afternoon to evening of May 20 with a wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph.
