Woman holding 'Free Kashmir' placard apologizes

India Blooms News Service | @indiablooms | 07 Jan 2020, 12:24 pm

Mumbai/UNI: The woman, who carried a placard displaying 'Free Kashmir' in the protest at the Gateway of India here, have apologized on Tuesday as her act was 'misinterpreted' and kicked up a political storm.

A native of this city, the woman identified as Mehak Mirza Prabhu claimed that her act was ''intended for peace in Jammu & Kashmir.''

The placard was seen in her hand on Monday evening during the massive protests to condemn the violence on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus.

''The picture created by entire social media came as an absolute shock to me. The placard meant ‘freedom to express themselves, freedom from the Internet lockdown which many people have been voicing for’. I was voicing my solidarity for basic constitutional right. No other agenda or motive whatsoever,'' clarified Ms Prabhu.

''I am (an) artist who believes in basic human compassion. If by being naïve in understanding the impact it would have, and in the process create this stir, I apologise,'' she added.

The controversial issue gathered more steam as BJP-activist lawyer Vivekanand Gupta even sought her arrest from the Commissioner of Police.
