Priyanka slams Yogi Govt for arrest of 14-month-old baby’s parents

New Delhi/UNI: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday criticised Uttar Pradesh government for the arrest of the couple, who have a breastfeeding toddler, for 'protesting' against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Varanasi, and accused the BJP government of showing inhuman attitude towards a baby.

Sharing a video clip in which the child’s grandmother Sheela Tiwari is seen appealing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to free her son Ravi Shekhar and his wife Ekta Singh, as their daughter’s health is deteriorating day by day in the absence of her parents, Priyanka said it is the moral duty of the government to allow the mother to go to her daughter.

“To suppress the protests, the BJP government has shown such inhumanity, that a small child has been separated from her parents. Champak’s health has been deteriorated but it does not affect the ill-affected mentality of the BJP government. Champak’s parents are in jail due to peaceful protests," Priyanka tweeted in Hindi.

“It is the moral duty of this government to allow the innocent mother of this child to go home," she added.

Activists Ekta Singh and Ravi Shekhar were among more than 60 persons arrested in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, for protesting against the CAA-NRC on Dec 19.

The couple is in jail after the local court denied them bail, while their 14-month baby is being looked after by Shekhar’s mother Tiwari.
