BJP's 'no NRC discussion' claim is a tactical retreat: Prashant Kishor

New Delhi/IBNS: Janata Dal (United) vice president and political strategist Prashant Kishor is perceiving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s claim that no discussion over the nation-wide National Register of Citizens (NRC) has taken place is a "tactical retreat" in the face of widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, and NRC.

Kishor tweeted, "The claim of “अभी तो NRC की कोई चर्चा ही नहीं हुई है” is nothing but a tactical retreat in the face of nationwide protest against #CAA_NRC. It is a pause and not the full stop. Govt could wait till SC judgement on CAA. A favourable court order and the whole process will be back."

Kishor's comment came days after both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah backtracked and said nothing has been discussed over NRC.

Making a U-turn at a rally in New Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on last Sunday, Modi said NRC was brought first by the Congress government and the current dispensation didn't even discuss it since it assumed power in 2014.

"NRC has not been taken up by the cabinet also," the Prime Minister had said.

Shah in an interview with ANI on Tuesday echoed the words of Modi though the Home Minister earlier on several occasions had said CAA will be succeeded by the NRC.

The Supreme Court will on Jan 22 hear 59 petitions against the new controversial Act, which will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.

Kishor's party supremo Nitish Kumar, who is also the Bihar Chief Minister, has already stated that he won't allow NRC to be conducted in his state though he runs the government in an alliance with the BJP.
