New Delhi/UNI: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will be visiting Iran on Sunday and Monday, according to official sources here.

Jaishankar will be attending the 19th Joint Commission meeting, which will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif.

During his visit, the External Affairs Minister is expected to call on President Hassan Rouhani, sources said on Saturday.

It may be mentioned that during the recent 2-Plus-2 meet between India and the US, matters related to Chabahar port project had figured prominently.

"I am very grateful to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for reiterating the US government support of the Chabahar project, which will immensely benefit Afghanistan," Jaishankar later said.

A meeting of the Follow-up Committee for implementation of the trilateral Chabahar Agreement between India, Afghanistan and Iran at the level of Joint Secretary and Director General was held on Friday in New Delhi.

All the three countries welcomed a steady progress in port operations by India Ports Global Ltd company since the taking over of the port operations at Shaheed Beheshti Port at Chabahar in December 2018.

It was also recognized that over five lakh tons of cargo has been handled successfully. This includes exports from Afghanistan through Chabahar Port which began in February 2019, an MEA statement said.
