Lucknow/IBNS: In his stern message sent to those involved in protesting against the new citizenship law passed by the Indian government, UP CM Yogi Adityanath said violence in the name of democracy will not be accepted.

In his message, Yogi said properties of those involved in damaging public assets will be seized by the authorities and then auctioned to compensate for the losses.

"No protest can be held without permission. Such acts will not be tolerated. You cant indulge in violence in name of protest," he told media.

The CM said: "Will seize the properties of those found guilty and compensate damage to public property."

The protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow turned violent once again on Thursday with the agitators setting police post on fire, media reports said.

The vehicles parked outside the police post were also torched.

Police said they had to fire tear-gas shells to bring situation under control in Madeyganj area.

Agitation against the newly amended citizenship law showed no signs of waning as countrywide protests were witnessed on Thursday with many places, including national capital of India, witnessing a partial shutdown of public transport, traffic restrictions and suspension of telecom and internet services.

Amid tight security arrangements and the imposition of section 144 of the CrPC in the entire state, the principle opposition Samajwadi Party on Thursday held protest in Uttar Pradesh opposing the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA).

In Lucknow, the SP legislators held protest at the Vidhan Bhawan from 0930 hrs in the morning under the statue of Choudhury Charan Singh raising slogans opposing the CAA.

Some legislators also climbed on the gates of the Vidhan Bhawan to draw media attention.
