Chennai, Sep 18 (UNI) The Opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday deferred its September 20 state-wide protest demonstration against Union  Home Minister Amit Shah's Hindi India unifying remarks, following an assurance from Governor Banwarilal Purohit that Hindi would not be imposed in the State.

Talking to reporters, after meeting the Governor on his invitation at Raj Bhavan this evening, Mr Stalin said it was a victory for the DMK.

He said the Governor clarified that Amit Shah's remarks were misinterpreted and assured that as a representative of the Centre he categorically stated that Hindi would not be imposed in the State.

When Mr Stalin asked the Governor whether the Centre would come forward to say it, Mr Purohit said that as the representative of the Central government he was conveying the views of the Centre.

Stalin also pointed out that Mr Amit Shah's he did not advocate Hindi as the only language for India and that his remarks were misinterpreted.

Accepting the clarifications, the DMK has deferred the proposed state-wide demonstration on Friday, he added.

Stalin, however, reiterated that the DMK would definitely oppose the imposition of Hindi in any form.

''This protest demonstration is deferred only temporarily,'' he added.

Since the proposed agitation by the DMK might have spread to other States, the Governor issued the clarification, he added.
