Praising Modi: Shashi Tharoor urges Congressmen to respect his approach on PM

India Blooms News Service | @indiablooms | 27 Aug 2019, 12:38 pm

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IBNS): Amid criticisms for his tweet urging opposition to 'praise Modi when he does right things', Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday asked his fellow party men to 'respect his approach'.

"I've been a strong critic of the Modi government, & i hope a constructive one. My staunch defence of inclusive values& constitutional principles has won me 3 elections. I urge my fellow Congressmen to respect my approach even when they don't agree with it," Tharoor tweeted.

Tharoor recently came out in support of his party colleague Jairam Ramesh who had cautioned against "demonising" Narendra Modi for every issue, media reports said.

"As you know, I have argued for six years now that Narendra Modi should be praised whenever he says or does the right thing, which would add credibility to our criticisms whenever he errs. I welcome others in opposition coming around to a view for which I was excoriated at the time," Tharoor was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The Congress did not accept his remark.

Congress Kerala leader Mullapally Ramachandran told the channel: "We have decided to seek explanation from Shashi Tharoor and the course of action will be taken based on his explanation. No one should be praising Modi at the expense of the Congress; the party will not accept that."

Perhaps moving away from the party's stand, two Congress leaders spoke in favour of the PM and said 'demonizing' Narendra Modi might not be correct.

First it was Jairam Ramesh and then  Abhishek Manu Singhvi also echoed similar opinions when the senior party leader tweeted: "Always said demonising #Modi wrong. No only is he #PM of nation, a one way opposition actually helps him. Acts are always good, bad & indifferent—they must be judged issue wise and nt person wise. Certainly, #ujjawala scheme is only one amongst other good deeds. #Jairamramesh."

He was actually reacting to the comment made by Ramesh.

Recently, Ramesh was quoted as saying by India Today that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance model was not a "complete negative story" and not recognising his work and demonizing him all the time is not going to help.

"He (Modi) talks in a language that connects him with the people. Unless we recognize that he is doing things which people recognise and which have not been done in the past, we are not going to be able to confront this guy,"  he was quoted as saying by the news magazine.

"Also, if you are going to demonize him all the time, you are not going to be able to confront him," he said.
