Now we can bring Kashmiri girls for marriage: Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar

Chandigarh, Aug 10 (IBNS): Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has triggered a controversy by commenting that after abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, girls from Kashmir can now be brought for marriage.

The CM was quoted as saying by the media at an event: "Dhankar once used to say that we will bring girls from Bihar to marry into Haryana. Now, people are saying that doors of Kashmir have been opened and we can get girls from that place."

The CM also added that the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao campaign has helped in improving sex-ration in his Haryana.

Khattar was criticised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the remark.

Gandhi said the comment was 'despicable'.

"Haryana CM, Khattar's comment on Kashmiri women is despicable and shows what years of RSS training does to the mind of a weak, insecure and pathetic man. Women are not assets to be owned by men," Gandhi tweeted.

The Haryana wing of the BJP criticised Gandhi for the remark and said he made the comment as he was insecured about Khattar's popularity.

" The useless nut@RahulGandhi you are so insecure of@mlkhattar i’s popularity because of the work he has done for the development of Haryana that you are in too much hurry of pointing out any issue that you think can harm the upcoming elections in Haryana पर पब्लिक सब जानती है," the party tweeted.

The Bharatiya Janata arty (BJP) government on Monday took away the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by scrapping Articles 370 and 35A.

The government bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir with an assembly and Ladakh without an assembly.

Article 35A of the Indian Constitution allowed the Jammu and Kashmir state's legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and also provided special rights and privileges to those permanent residents.

Article 370 allowed Jammu and Kashmir to have its own constitution, flag and right to handle its own laws except on matters that impact national security.

The decision, which received support from several opposition parties, also prompted Pakistan to downgrade bilateral trade with India. Calling its neighbour as an "alarmist", India urged Pakistan to reconsider its decision.
