Kolkata: Govt lawyers boycott Justice Sampati Chatterjee's court room
Kolkata, July 22 (UNI): A single-judge bench of Calcutta High Court today asked 11 councillors of Bongaon municipality to file affidavits even as government-empanelled lawyers stayed away from the court-room to protest her observations on political tussle over no-trust motion in the civic body.
Justice Samapti Chatterjee issued the ruling amid simmering tension in the high court after government-empanelled lawyers announced that they would henceforth not attend her court.
Additional government pleader Bhaskar Baishya told UNI, "Justice Chatterjee has made some political comments during hearing of Bongaon municipality no-trust motion lawsuit.
“Government-empanelled lawyers have taken a resolution attend her court to protest against such unwanted remarks.
“The way the judge is heckling government lawyers during hearing of the case, it is not possible for us to attend her court,” he said.
Baisya said, “We have written to the advocate general Kishore Dutta for forwarding the resolution not to attend Justice Chatterjee’s court to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.”
The matter came before the high court scanner after a friction took place between supporters of TMC and BJP in front of the municipality ahead of the no-trust motion on Tuesday.
Police allegedly baton-charged the agitated BJP supporters and fired teargas shells to disperse the crowd.
The TMC had a clear majority in the municipality with 19 councillors. The CPI(M) and the Congress have one councillor each.
No trust motion against the TMC-run 22-member civic body was moved after 14 councillor crossed over to BJP nearly a fortnight ago.
