Kolkata, June 20 (IBNS): The death toll in violence at West Bengal's Bhatpara has climbed to two with one of the four injured succumbing to his injuries, media reports said.

The three other injured persons continue to be critical.

A 17-year-old boy was killed and four were injured in a clash which broke out between two unidentified groups in violence-hit Bhatpara in West Bengal on Thursday.

Rambabu Shaw, the deceased, was a pani-poori seller. The injured were admitted to hospital in critical condition. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed in the area.

The police had to fire tear gas shells after crude bombs were lobbed and gunshots were fired. Some reports said the police also had opened fire.

The incident occurred just before the West Bengal police chief was about to inaugurate a new building of the local police station in North 24 Parganas.

Following the incident, the state police chief, the chief secretary and other top officials are holding an emergency meeting on the order of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Several incidents of violence have taken place in Bhatpara since May 19 when the bypoll for the Assembly constituency was held.

The Bhatpara constituency had fallen vacant after sitting MLA Arjun Singh had left the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to contest from the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat.

On June 11, one person was killed in a bomb attack which took place at Kankinara in Bhatpara.

Md. Mukhtar, some of his family members and others were sitting outside their houses in Baruipara when the attack took place. Mukhtar had died on spot.
