Sewer death: Gujarat CM Rupani declares Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia

Vadodara, Jun 15 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Saturday announced Rs four lakh financial assistance to the descendants of seven people, including four sweepers, who died while cleaning a gutter line and associated septic tank near a private hotel in Faratikui village under Dabhoi taluka of Vadodara district in Central Gujarat, an official statement said.

According to the statement, Rupani, who is currently in New Delhi to attend the meeting of NITI Aayog, instructed the district administration to take strict action against the private hotel manager, who was at large after the incident.

According to Police, owner of the hotel, identified as Hassan Abbas Ismail Boraniya, who had reportedly engaged the sweepers and his workers to get down in the gutter line and septic tank, fled after the incident.

A case of culpable homicide has been lodged against him.

The deceased were identified as sweepers- Hitesh A Harijan (23), his father Ashok B Harijan (45), Mahesh M Harijan (25), Mahesh R Pananwadiya (46), all belonging to Thuwavi in Dabhoi taluka.

Besides, Ajay Vasava (24), resident of Kadvali village in Netrang Taluka at Bharuch, Vijay A Chaudhry (22) and Shahdev R Vasava (22), both residents of village Velavi in Umarpada taluka of Surat district, also lost their lives.

Police said that one of the deceased went inside the tank first and when he did not come out, the other went in, one-by-one. They all died due to asphyxiation inside the tank.
