I am chanting Jai Shree Ram, arrest me if you can: Amit Shah dares Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, May 13 (IBNS): Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah has challenged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to arrest him as he chanted 'Jai Shree Ram' while addressing a rally in the state.

West Bengal has witnessed violence in the last six phases of the Lok Sabha polls and its run-up with the BJP emerging as the major opposition force against the ruling TMC.

"I am chanting Jai Shree Ram now, I am leaving for Kolkata. Arrest me if you can," Shah said at a rally at Joynagar near Kolkata in South 24 Parganas district.

Jai Shree Ram is a slogan often used by Hindus to praise Lord Ram.

The BJP leaders often use it while delivering their slogan.

The entire row over the Jai Shree Ram slogan started recently when a video went viral on the social media where a group of people were seen chanting the slogan when Mamata Banerjee's convoy was passing through an area.

In the video, the CM could be seen stopping her convoy and chasing those who chanted the slogan.

BJP and Mamata Banerjee's TMC are engaged in a stiff political battle in Bengal.

In the last phase of voting on Sunday, people will exercise their franchise in nine seats.

Bengal has 42 seats.

Amit Shah on Monday alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cancelled permission for his rally because she was afraid her nephew, who is contesting from one of the seats that Shah was supposed to hold a rally, would lose.

Addressing a public meeting here, Shah said: “I was to visit 3 places today, but Mamata's ji's nephew is contesting from one of the seats so she is scared her nephew will lose, and that's why she cancelled the permission for our rally.

Shah alleged that Mamata Banerjee is blocking the benefits given by Modi government to the people of West Bengal.

"Mamata Didi in Bengal does not give the benefit of any scheme of Modi Ji's government because Mamata Didi believes that if these schemes start here Modi will become more popular here," he said.

Earlier, Shah was denied permission to hold a rally in Baripur which was falls under Jadavpur constituency in the run-up to the last phase of polls.

The party sources on Monday said that although permission was granted for Shah's chopper to land here, it was later denied by authorities.
