Barrackpore, Apr 8 (UNI) Tension ran high in front of Bhatpara municipality office at Kakinara in North 24 Parganas as supporters of ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition BJP shouted slogans against each other after a secret ballot following a no-confidence motion was passed to oust sitting chairman and BJP candidate from Barrackpore Arjun Singh.

Arjun Singh has been the chairman of the TMC run Bhatpara municipality since 2010 and had recently joined the BJP, which nominated the four-time MLA to contest for saffron brigade from the industrial Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat for 2019.

After his joining the BJP, the state ruling TMC wanted to remove Mr Singh from the chairmanship and for this a secret ballot vote on no-confidence was held. TMC won 21-11 in the 34-member Bhatpara municipality.

After the result the TMC supporters outside the municipality celebrated the occasion and shouted slogans against Singh. Later Singh's followers also assembled in front of the municipality and shouted slogans in favour of Singh, who said he was removed unconstitutionally.

Slogans and counter slogans forced the local police station to deploy rapid action force and and riot police to face any eventuality.

When the report last came in, tension was running high even as police took charge to restore peace.
