Guwahati, Feb 9 (IBNS)  : Even as massive protests continued in Assam and other states of the North Eastern region against the Citizenship
Amendment Bill, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the BJP-led NDA Government is fully committed to protecting the
right to language and culture of Assam and the states of North East.

Addressing a public rally held at Changsari near Guwahati, PM Modi said  some people are spreading misinformation about the bill.

He further said that those parties who are engaged in spreading confusion have never shown honesty in implementing the Assam Accord
for 30-35 years.

“It is our endeavor to implement Clause 6 of Assam Accord as soon as possible. For this, a committee has also been formed by our government. I have special attachment with the people of Assam and the Northeast. Your affection and blessings are very important to me," he said.

"We have to understand the difference between the people who are forced to leave their homes due to atrocities due to the intruders and faith in India. The subject of citizenship amendment is not just related to Assam or North East. In many parts of the country there are such children who have faith in Maa Bharti, there are people who have come to India by saving their lives. Whether it came from Pakistan, came from Afghanistan or from Bangladesh, it was part of India before 1947, when the country was divided on the basis of faith,” PM Modi said.

"It is our duty, responsibility to protect those minorities- Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians, who were left there in countries separated from us.

“My government is fully devoted to the interests of Assam and the people of the state. According to Assam Accord, our government is also
working on granting the ST status to six communities. It has also been done by our government to bring the bill in the Rajya Sabha. It will also be ensured that the rights of the present tribes of Assam, their rights are fully protected, while giving ST status to these six communities,” Modi said.

“We have raised the voice of the public every time to liberate the country from the intruders. We have compromised the condominium to prevent infiltration from Bangladesh, and India-Bangladesh border is now stepping up to seal,” he said.

The Prime Minister said  for the past 50-55 months, the central government and the state government are continuously engaged in establishing Assam on the development map of the country.

Modi had laid foundation stones for several projects, including a six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra river connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati at an estimated cost of Rs 2187 crore, Numaligarh Refinery Ltd's bio-diesel refinery and Barauni-Guwahati gas pipeline.

The PM was greeted with black flags by several organisations, including All Assam Students Union (AASU), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) as a mark of protest against the Citizenship amendment bill.
