Kolkata, Jan 16 (IBNS): Oil Industry in India under the guidance of Ministry of Petroleum & natural Gas is observing SAKSHAM-19 (Sanrakshan Kshamata Mahotsav ) from Jan 16 to Feb 15 and will be conducting various awareness campaigns for one month for general public as well as industry to spread message of Oil and Gas Conservation.

India is having limited resources of petroleum products and more than 80% of demand of petroleum products is met through imports. This leads to excess pressure on our import bill and erosion of foreign reserves. Keeping in view this fact, Government of India along with Oil companies and PCRA observe SAKSHAM (Sanrakshan Kshamata Mahotshov)- Campaign on Oil & Gas Conservation every year.

The tagline of SAKSHAM-2019 is “Indhan Sanrakshan Ki Jimmedari Jan Gan Ki Bhagidari”.

The Saksham -2019 i.e. Oil and Gas Conservation awareness programme in West Bengal was formally inaugurated at Science City Auditorium, Kolkata  by Dr. Ajoy Kumar Ray, Professor – IIT Kharagpur, in presence of Shri Amit Kumar Basu, Regional Level Coordinator (RLC) for Oil Industry and ED I/C IOCL, Eastern Region, Shri Amitava Majumdar, State Level Coordinator(SLC) for West Bengal and Chief GM, IOCL, WB in presence of senior officials and Dealers from Oil Marketing Companies.

Speaking at the inaugural program Dr. Ajoy Kumar Ray, the Chief Guest highlighted the issue of conservation of petroleum products and hazards associated with their improper use and wastage.

The large gathering included more than 400 school students & officials from various NGOs.

The planned activities for SAKSHAM-2019 include (i) Bringing awareness about health hazards due to use of Bio Mass and appeal to stop use of Bio Mass and encourage use of Greener Fuels like LPG in rural areas (ii) Drive to make villages and towns Smoke Free (iii) Training of Drivers of commercial vehicles (Auto, Taxi & Trucks) for conserving diesel/CNG which will also help in reduction of the Green House Gases and (iv) Motivation of students and youth for promoting Oil and Gas conservation and their contribution towards Clean and Green Environment. This year, 20th January 2019 will be celebrated as Bicycle Day in the country. Cycle Rallies and walkathons on Oil Conservation will be organized by Oil Industry.

This annual mass education and awareness campaign once again brings into focus the compelling needs for us to conserve oil and gas that are

Non-renewable natural resources. A publicity van for public awareness of Oil Conservation was also flagged off from the venue.
