Citizenship Bill protest: Students, woman vendors injured during clash with police in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 11 (IBNS): Several students, woman vendors and security personnel were injured during a clash between the protesters and security personnel as agitators attempted to storm the Manipur Raj Bhawan on Friday in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.

Imphal city looked like a battlefield due to the protest.

According to the reports, raising slogans against the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, hundreds of students mobilized by All Manipur students’ Union (AMSU), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), Manipuri Students’ Federation, SUK took out a protest rally in the capital city of Manipur.

Later on, the woman vendors too joined the protest rally of the students.

When the protesters were heading towards the Raj Bhawan, the police team deployed in Imphal tried to block the rally near M Sector, resulting to a tussle between the police and protesters.

To control the situation and disperse the mob, police fired tear gas shells, mock bombs.

A police personnel also sustained injury while attempting to control the mob.

While the police personnel were attempting to disperse the mob, a group of CPI Manipur state council members also took out a protest rally against the Citizenship bill. 

The Left Coordination Committee Comprises of CPI, CPI(M), Manipur Forward Front etc.
