Mamata Banerjee wishes Ranjan Gogoi for becoming new CJI

Kolkata, Sept 14 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday wished  46th Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi for his appointment to the post.

He will assume office on Oct 3.

Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "May I humbly congratulate Justice Ranjan Gogoi, appointed as the 46th Chief Justice of India who will assume office on October 3. We are very proud of you."

Outgoing CJI Dipak Misra will retire on Oct 2.

As Oct 2 is a national holiday on the birthday of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, a day ago will be CJI Misra's last working day.

The CJI had earlier suggested Justice Gogoi's name as his successor.

Justice Gogoi is the senior most judge of the top court after CJI Misra presently.

Justice Gogoi was one of the four senior Supreme Court judges who had held an unprecedented press conference early this year, in a virtual revolt against the CJI.

The judges had voiced their displeasure over the CJI's assigning of cases with far reaching consequences selectively.
