Kerala floods: As water level subsides, victims now face snake menace

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 25 (IBNS): As the water level in flood-hit Kerala is slowly receding, paving way for normalcy, the victims in India's southern most state now face a new reptile menace.

Authorities have warned locals to beware of snakes and other reptiles, which may have settled down in previously flooded homes.

Several snake-catching teams too have been deployed by state authorities amid reports of a rise in patients with snake bites.

The situation has worsened in central and northern Kerala, where floods took a heavy toll.

Hospitals in the state, especially the worst hit areas, have amped up its anti-venom supplies.

Speaking about the situation, local snake handler Vava Suresh told the Hindustan Times: "One was found inside the wardrobe on the second floor of a house... while another one was inside a shelf in a house."

The floods, deemed the worst in years, claimed at least 400 lives and displaced another million people, who are now returning back to their homes.
