Dispur, July 30 (IBNS): Names of around 40 lakh (4 million) people have found no place in the second and final draft of Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was released on Monday, media reports said.

NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela, Registrar General Sailesh and Joint Secretary (NC) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Satyendra Garg, held a press conference after releasing the list amid tight security.

Sailesh has been quoted by The Indian Express as saying, "2,89,83,677 out of 3.29 crore applicants are eligible," leaving out around 40 lakh people who could not make it to the list.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh have said ample opportunities will be given to the left out people for filing claims and objections.

Asking people not to panic, Sonowal had earlier tweeted, "I reiterate that no genuine Indian citizen will be devoid of their citizenship rights. So no one should panic after publication of the final draft of NRC. I also urge people not to make any communal statements and remain watchful against falling prey to rumours."

Security has been beefed up in the state to avoid any untoward situation following the release of the list.

The first draft, which was published on Dec 31, 2017, included the names of 1.9 cr people out of 3.29 cr applicants.
