Guwahati, June 26 (IBNS): Despite a Supreme Cour direction, Assam may miss the June 30 deadline for the publication the first draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC), which contains the names of the Indian citizens of Assam and aims at removing names of illegal immigrants from voters' list.

The Supreme Court has directed the Registrar General of India (RGI) and the State Coordinator of NRC to publish the same by June 30.

While the Supreme Court has already given a deadline to publish the final draft of NRC, which was first prepared in 1951 after the first census, the state coordinator of NRC may miss the deadline set by the apex court.

Sources said that, the Centre is likely to move the Supreme Court, requesting it to extend the NRC final draft publication deadline.

The Centre is likely to request the apex court to extend the publication date due to the flood situation in the state.

The verification process have reportedly been affected in many NRC Seva Kendras.

Meanwhile, State Coordinator of NRC Prateek Hajela refused to comment on the issue.

Earlier, a Supreme Court bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman had directed the RGI and the State Coordinator of NRC to publish the final draft by June 30.

Recently, RGI Shailesh had visited Assam and held a series of meeting with the State Coordinator of NRC Prateek Hajela and top officials of Assam government, Assam police.

They had discussed about the publication of final draft of NRC.

The RGI also visited several districts and held meetings with the district administration.

The first draft of NRC was published on December 31 midnight by including names of 1.90 crore people out of the total 3.29 crore applicants of Assam recognising them as legal citizens of India.
