Flood situation in Assam worsens, three die, over 1.66 lakh people affected

Guwahati, June 14 (IBNS): The current flood situation in Assam has worsened with waters inundating more areas, affecting over 1.66 lakh people in 7 districts out of 32 in the state.

At least three persons died in flood and landslides in the state.

Over 1.60 lakh people of Karimganj, Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong West, Karbi Anglong East, Golaghat, Hojai and Cachar district are affected in the current flood.

Several landslide incidents triggered by incessant rains have also been reported in the hill district district.

Two persons died in landslides at Mahur area under Haflong sub division in the hill district on Thursday.

Around 166 houses have been fully damaged.

The NF Railway authority has cancelled all trains running in the hills section between Lumding-Silchar due to landslides at several places and damage of tracks between New Haflong-Migrendisa Mahur and Phaiding and in the diversion section between Jatinga-Lampur.

The railway has cancelled the 55616 Guwahati – Silchar fast passenger between Lumding and Silchar, 55616 Silchar – Guwahati fast passenger.

On the other hand, the 25657 Sealdah – Silchar Kanchanjungha Express is controlled at Lumding, 15658 Agartala – Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express is controlled at Badarpur.

Meanwhile, at least seven persons are reportedly missing after five dumpers, used in road construction, have been washed away by Kalachand river at Maibong area in Dima Hasao district.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person died in flash flood at Bokakhat area in Golaghat district.

The flood waters submerged 1.37 lakh hectares agricultural land of 370 villages.

Over 77,000 people are affected alone in flood-hit Karimganj district, while over 58,000 people are affected in Hailakandi district.

On the other hand, around 36,000 people are homeless and they had taken shelter in the 116 numbers temporary based relief camps set up by the administration of flood-hit districts.

The flood situation is worsened in Karimganj and Hailakandi district after flood waters of Katakhal river had breached embankments in five different places and also washed away two bridges in the Barak valley districts.

Following incessant rains, water level of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have been gradually increased in different places and also flown above danger level mark some places.

A part of Kaziranga National Park has been submerged by flood waters, but there are no reports any animal casualty.

The park authority and forest department are closely monitoring the current wave flood.

On the other hand, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have been engaged into service in the flood affected areas for search and rescue operation and the teams have  rescued 422 person in Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar and Golaghat districts.
