Assam Police detain six people, including BJP member, over ISIS flag recovery

Guwahati, May 9 (IBNS): Assam police has detained six persons, including a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member, for questioning over the recovery of a purported ISIS flag in Lower Assam’s Nalbari district. 

The Nalbari police on Monday night (May 7) had picked up six persons for their alleged role in sticking the black coloured ISIS flag to a tree at Koihati area in the Lower Assam district.

The persons who were detained by the police have been identified as Tapan Barman, Dwipjyoti Thakuria, Sorojjyoti Baishya, Pulak Barman, Mojamil Ali and Moon Ali.

Among them, Tapan Barman has been identified as a former Congress councillor, who recently joined in the saffron party and presently a member of BJP’s Nalbari district committee.

On May 3, local people had found a black coloured ISIS flag written in Arabic language.

The ISIS flag surfaced with the message 'Join in ISIS'. It was seen attached to a tree at Koihati area in the Lower Assam district.

When local people had noticed the ISIS flag, they immediately informed police and police taken the flag down.

Meanwhile, Nalbari district Superintendent of Police (SP) Shiladitya Chetia said that, police has registered a suo moto case following the incident and started investigation.

“It seems from prima facie that, the flag was basically an attempt to recreate an ISIS flag, but it was wrongly made. Somebody is trying to create a sensation. We have interrogated some people on the ground reports. We are also calling some people who are leading in the area, basically to help us in the investigation.”

It is to be mentioned that, six 'IS NE' flags were also found at Goalpara town nearby a police station on May 2.

The local people, who were out for morning walk on the river bank, had found the black colour flags had Arabic language written on them with ‘IS NE’ might be a short form for Islamic State North East.

Following the two incidents of ISIS flags appearing in Lower Assam have raised serious concerns amid the local people as fearing about is the Islamic terror group trying to create base and footprints in Assam.
