Six-hour bandh in West Bengal, transport services normal largely

Kolkata, Apr 13 (IBNS): The transport services are largely normal in West Bengal even as the Left Front called a six-hour bandh in the state, protesting against the pre-Panchayat poll violence, media reports said.

The bandh has been called between 6 am and 12 pm on Friday.

Though few trains are running late, airport and ferry services are running normally.

The jute mills, IT sectors are operating normally in Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal.

An incident of a clash has been reported in Durgapur where police stopped a rally held by Left supporters. Around 100 men have been arrested by police.

The incident occurred near Durgapur station, around 175 kms from Kolkata.

The Congress has "morally" supported the bandh, called by the Left.

However, the other opposition party, BJP, did not support the strike. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Dilip Ghosh told a Bengali news channel on Friday morning that people have rejected the strike.

"We also fight on the ground but do not support bandhs" Ghosh said.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday called the bandh as a "drama by CPI-M".

The state has witnessed violence by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and opposition BJP from the first day of nomination filing.

The opposition parties have alleged that the TMC are hindering them from filing nominations across the state for the panchayat poll.
