Kolkata, Feb 28 (IBNS): A fire broke out at a departmental store in southern Kolkata's Ganguly Bagan area on Wednesday afternoon, reports said.

According to reports, the fire was first seen at around 1:10 pm. inside the basement of retail store Big Bazaar which is located at Orbit Mall at Raja Subodh Chandra Mallick Road under Netaji Nagar Police Station limits near Baghajatin Colony.

Soon, heavy black smoke reached another floor of the departmental store.

The incident triggered huge panic among locals as several residential flats are located above Big Bazaar in a housing complex. A hospital and a petrol pump are located metres away from Orbit Mall.

After evacuating customers from the mall and residents from the entire building, staffers of the departmental outlet and locals had started firefighting operations, using apartment's own fire extinguishing systems.

Later, as many as six fire tenders, local police and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel rushed to the scene and joined the operation.

A fire official said that main source of the blaze has been identified and arrested.

"We have arrested the source of the fire and currently we are dousing pocket fires while our cooling off process is also underway," the official told IBNS.

A local police official confirmed that no casualty has been reported so far.
