Kashmir: Militants, civilian killed during encounter

Srinagar, Jan 24 (IBNS): Two militants and a teenage boy was killed during a gunfight between militants and government forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday.

Additionally, two girls were injured during the encounter.

According to reports, after receiving inputs about the presence of militants forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police along with Special Operation Group  laid cordon in Chaigund Dairoo village of Shopian district in South Kashmir.  

Sources added when forces zeroed in the suspected house, militants fired some round on the search party that turned into encounter, resulting death of two local militants.

As the encounter was raging, the locals of the area took to roads and attempted to march towards the encounter site amidst pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

The security personnel fired tear gas shells to disperse them and later resorted to firing after coming under intense stone pelting from the mob, the sources said.

During the clash, a 17-year-old boy, identified as Shakir Ahmad Mir, died.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid said that two militants have been killed in the gunfight.

“In an encounter today at Saigund Shopian,” he said, two militants have been “neutralized and weapons have been recovered.”

“Unfortunately one boy was also killed in the cross-fire and two ladies sustained injuries. Search is still going on,” he said, in a tweet.

The teenager’s killing is the first civilian killing in law and order situation in the Valley this year.
