Union Minister Satyapal Singh calls Darwin's Theory of Evolution as 'scientifically wrong', scientists ask him to retract statement

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IBNS): Union Minister State for Human Resource Development Satyapal Singh has triggered a controversy by calling Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution as 'scientifically wrong'.

He said he wants the theory to be removed from school and college curriculum.

"Darwin's theory (of evolution) is scientifically wrong. It needs to change in school and college curriculum. Since the man is seen on Earth he has always been a man," he was quoted as saying to media during an event recently.

Singh had earlier served as the Police Commissioner of Mumbai.

The Congress was quick in attacking Singh over his remarks.

"Hon’ble Min may be correct in his Counter Darwanianism that perhaps no oral or written history empirically records apes turning into men but in recent times metaphorically speaking we have seen men turning/behaving like apes. That should be recorded," Congress leader Manish Tewari tweeted.

Indian scientists have not welcomed Singh's remarks.

They have drafted a letter against Satyapal Singh's statement.

"We, the Scientists, science communicators and scientifically oriented members of public, are deeply pained by your claim. It is factually incorrect to state that the evolutionary principle has been rejected by the scientific community. On the contrary, every new discovery adds support to Darwin’s insights. One should also note that it is no longer merely a mechanism for organic evolution, but several other evolutionary phenomena in nature," read the letter.

Scientists also asked Singh to retract his statement.
