Kolkata: One held in M P Birla school sexual assault case
Kolkata, Dec 4 (IBNS): While the outrage over the sexual assault of a GD Birla school infant in Kolkata raged, the city police on Monday night arrested one person for his alleged involvement in sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl student of another institution, the M P Birla School, officials said.
According to reports, a non-teaching staff of Behala's M P Birla Foundation Higher Secondary school, Manoj Singh, was held from Behala area.
"Manoj Singh, who is the primary accused in the case, was arrested today from Behala and he has been charged under few sections of POCSO Act," a senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS.
"He will be produced before a POCSO court at Alipore on Tuesday and we will appeal for his police custody for further interrogation," the official added.
Days ago, family members of a student of M P Birla school's nursery section alleged that their child was sexually abused by school staffer Manoj Singh inside the school in September and neither the school authority nor local police had taken any action against the accused in last two and half months.
Protesting the incident and demanding strict steps against the accused and the school, a large number of guardians gathered in front of M P Birla school on Monday and held a day-long peaceful demonstration programme.
Due to the protests, traffic on James Long Sarani was disrupted for hours.
Amidst massive protest, principal of the school, who first denied all allegations, announced to suspended the accused employee, Manoj Singh, pending enquiry.
Later in the evening, when M P Birla school's teachers and staffers were being evacuated by a school bus, protesting guardians tried to stop them and police restored to lathicharge.
The protesting guardians, however, demanded a strict legal action against Manoj and the authority of M P Birla school.
