Chennai, Nov 4 (IBNS): Sustained rainfall over a period of seven days has inundated the state capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, resulting in the death of at least 12 people, reports said.

Thus far, Chennai has recorded 554.2mm of rainfall this year, which is three-fourth of the average annual rainfall it receives.

According to data shared by the meteorological department, the city has recorded 441.3mm of rainfall till Friday.

Heavy waterlogged streets have also impeded traffic movement for the second straight day.

Meanwhile, the district collector has also declared a school holiday on Saturday.

Reviewing the situation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who visited Mudichur and Perungalathur along with Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, said, "We have seen Bengaluru and Mumbai getting inundated during rain. But due to the execution of the (disaster management) plan envisaged by Amma's government in 2015 on how to remove flood water from low-lying areas, there is not much water stagnation today. People are unaffected."
