Gurdaspur, Oct 15 (IBNS): The Congress made a strong performance at the Gurdaspur by-poll as its candidate Sunil Jakhar clinched Los Sabha seat by beating his nearest rival- BJP nominee Swaran Salaria-with a margin of 1,93,219 votes.

At the end of the counting, it was found that Sunil Jakhar managed to get  4,99,752 votes while his opponent Swaran Salaria received  3,06,533 votes.

Aam Aadmi Party nominee Major General (Retd) Suresh Khajuria  stood at the third spot with  23,579 votes.

BJP MP Vinod Khanna's death earlier this year had left the seat vacant.

The Congress party congratulated its candidate and tweeted: "Congratulations to @sunilkjakhar and @INCPunjab workers for their win in #GurdaspurByPoll."

Punjab CM Amrinder Singh also wished the winning candidate and remarked: "So it’s 1,93,219..! Not much behind my expectation of a 2 lakh victory margin for @sunilkjakhar ji. What a vindication of our policies!"

He said the result of the by-poll marked the revival of the Congress.

"The #Gurdaspur by-election marks another major step in the revival of @INCIndia, it's clear that party is on upswing ahead of 2019 LS polls," he said.
