Some elements trying to create disturbances ahead of NRC draft publication, Assam police sounds alert

Guwahati, Aug 9 (IBNS): The Assam Police sounded high alert across the state following intelligence input that some elements have been trying to create disturbance situation in the state ahead of draft publication of update of National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Assam police ADGP (Special Branch) Pallav Bhattacharya said, "We have issued alert notification to all district police and other security agencies to tackle any untoward situation."

Recently, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has alerted Assam police that, few organisations from outside Assam and foreign organisations are trying to establish their footprint in the state and are discussing about NRC's update issue with some Assam based organisations.

“These organisations are mostly from South India, Northern India and Bangladesh. They feared that, maximum minority people (Muslim) name, residing in Assam will not register in the much awaited draft publication of NRC update. Some organisations have raised the issue in group meetings held in mosques, madrasas,” a top IB official said.

The top IB official also said that, some members of Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Neo JMB, Ansarullah Bangla Team are trying to sneak into India through Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and West Bengal.

Meanwhile, Assam police ADGP Bhattacharya said that, Assam police has taken the matter very seriously.

The draft publication of NRC update in Assam is likely to be published on December 31 in this year.

According to the reports, around 95 per cent verification process of NRC update has been completed so far.

A top official of Office of the State Coordinator of NRC said that, several fake documents were found during the verification process, which were submitted with the application forms.

Over 68 lakh families of the state had submitted their required documents with the NRC application forms.

The top Assam cop said that, the police has monitored activities of some organisations like South India based organisation Popular Front of India.

Meanwhile, Assam Police Special DG Kula Saikia and ADGP (SB) Pallav Bhattacharya on Tuesday visited upper Assam and discussed with top police officials of Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivsagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and officials of other security agencies.

Another top Assam cop Mukesh Agarwala (ADGP of law & order) visited lower Assam districts to review the situation.
