New Delhi, June 23 (IBNS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday condemned the lynching of police officer Mohammad Ayub Pandith and said he was 'pained beyond words' by coming to know about the incident.

"The brutal lynching of DySP Md Ayub Pandith marks a new low. Pained beyond words at the horrific incident," Office of RG tweeted.

"Heartbreaking to see J&K being pushed back several decades because of the complete failure of the PDP/BJP Govt," he said attacking the state government.

The slain police officer was  reportedly providing security to the separatist leader.

A mob had beaten to death Pandith, a Deputy Supereintendent of Jammu and Kashmir police  outside the landmark Jamia Masjid in Srinagar on Thursday.

He was posted on an anti-sabotage duty outside the mosque when the mob attacked him.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police SP Vaid said that two people have been arrested and third person has been identified regarding the lynching of the police officer.

"One needs to make people understand what is good and what is bad. The person who was lynched was in fact doing his duty to protect them," the DGP said on twitter.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti attended the funeral of the officer.
