Is Assam safe for women, over 23,000 women raped in past one and half decade

Guwahati, Feb 10 (IBNS): Is Assam safe for women, this question raised after three rape cases reportedly came to light in the north eastern Indian state in past 48 hours.

According to the reports, a minor girl was allegedly raped by four persons in Lower Assam’s Goalpara district, while another raped minor was found from a roadside area near Jorabat along Assam-Meghalaya border last night.

On the other hand, a woman attendant was escaped an attempt to outrage her modesty by a miscreant at a government run hospital in Golaghat district.

According to the reports, four persons had forcefully picked up two minor girls on Thursday night, while they returned from a marriage party in Goalpara district.

A girl had managed to escape from the culprits clutches, but another was gang raped.

Goalpara police had arrested two among the culprits.

On the other hand, Meghalaya police had recovered a minor girl along the roadside area near Jorabat, who allegedly raped by miscreants and later handed over to Assam counterparts.

Apart from two cases, a women attendant had managed to escape an attempt to outrage her modesty by a miscreant at Swahid Kushal Konwar civil hospital in Golaghat district on Thursday night.

The victim said that, the miscreant took her to the rooftop on the pretext of providing her with free medicines and then tried to rape her.

The women belonging to adivasi community was attending to her husband, who admitted at the government run hospital after suffering burn injuries.

In past one and half decade, around 23, 500 women were raped in the state.

According to the Assam government data, a total of 23,517 women were raped from 2001 to Jan 2017 in the state.

The government figures indicated that, average 5 women have been raped in Assam per day.

“There are so many acts in our country to protect women and children, but these have not properly implemented. Following the growing up crimes against women, it showed that, the state becomes unsafe for women,” Monty Mamu Kashyap, a social activist said.

Recently, two students of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) were arrested by police, who allegedly molested three girls during the annual cultural fesvital of the prestigious institution.

Assam and north east India faced militancy problems since past couple of decades and several civilians had lost their lives in militant attacks in the region.

In past one and half decade, a total of 2593 civilians killed by extremists in Assam.

But, the rape incidents much bigger than the extremist attack on civilian.
