Facebook Live from Assam assembly : AIUDF legislator suspended for three days

Guwahati, Feb 6 (IBNS) : Assam assembly speaker Hitendranath Goswami on Monday suspended AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam, who representing the Dhing constituency of middle Assam’s Nagaon district, for using Facebook Live to broadcast his speech from inside of the house.

The Assam assembly speaker suspended the AIUDF MLA till Feb 8 from the ongoing budget session.

“I request Islam to leave the house immediately,” Goswami said.

“The ethics committee recommended suspension of the legislator for a specific period from the house and I have accepted the recommendation,” the Assam assembly speaker said.

Goswami further said that, he had received complain against the legislator from several MLAs including Parliamentary Affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary.

“After receiving complaints, my office submitted video footage to me and it was clear case of breach of Model Code of Conduct. Later, I requested the ethics committee to probe into the matter and the committee recommended suspension of the legislator,” the Assam assembly speaker said.

The AIUDF MLA, who broadcasted his speech on Facebook Live by using his mobile phone in the assembly on Feb 3.

Following the incident, the AIUDF MLA Islam said that, there is nothing in the rule book that says anything about using social media in the assembly.

“I uploaded live my speech on Facebook only for benefit the people who needed to know about which critical issues discussed in the assembly. So I am not wrong about it,” Islam said.

Meanwhile, Aminul Islam had submitted a written apology before the Assam assembly speaker for his conduct of violating assembly ethics.
