Supreme Court refuses to consider plea on Jallikattu ban

India Blooms News Service | | 12 Jan 2017, 01:44 pm
New Delhi/Chennai, Jan 12 (IBNS): With the Supreme Court of India saying on Thursday that it is not possible to give a verdict in the next couple of days about the holding of Jallikattu, the bull taming sport of Tamil Nadu, it is unlikely that the event will be observed this year, media reported.

Jallikattu, or taming the bull, is a traditional sport of Tamil Nadu, held during the Pongal celebration or the harvest festival that would be observed on Saturday this year.

The sport has not been held over the past two years after the SC banned it in May 2014 citing cruelty to animals as flagged by many animal activist groups.

The court said it cannot hear a petition challenging its ban on Jallikattu as it is in the process of delivering judgement on the validity of a notification by the Centre allowing the sport, reported NDTV.

Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam, who had earlier said that he will ensure Jallikattu is held this year, petitioned the centre to issue an ordinance to allow the sport this year, media reported.

The ruling party AIADMK too had separately petitioned the Central government to allow the sport.

Tweeted Amish Tripathi, author of Shiva Trilogy, " #Jallikattu should be permitted & celebrated. Some norms for safety may be established. But it should not be banned."
