Indian Railways organises Round Table to discuss environmental and housekeeping issues

New Delhi, Jan 11 (IBNS): The Indian Railways (IR), on Wednesday, organised a Round Table discussion in New Delhi with non-railway stakeholders, on various environmental and housekeeping issues related to the department.

Besides Union Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Minister of State for Railways, Rajen Gohain, Chairman, Railway Board, A.K. Mital and Member Staff, Railway Board Pradeep Kumar were also present.

Speaking at the Round Table, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said, " As a modern responsive organisation we cannot afford to work in isolation and we must tune ourselves to emerging trends in economy and society."

In a series of tweets, Prabhu said, "For gaining perspectives, exchanging knowledge,improve our workings,came up with the idea of Roundtable discussions with ext stakeholders."

"Managing operations with sustaining environment is a challenge.We are working on mainstreaming sustainability in our strategy."

"Have set up a separate Directorate for Environment.It is no more a peripheral activity,now integrated with and complements core activity. Land use optimization,afforestation,water bodies restoration,cleanliness just some of activities we r working on to ensure sustainability."

The minister said that the Indian Railways is giving a big push to use of renewable energy, electrification for ensuring sustainability and cost efficiency.

At the discussion, the Railway ministry highlighted that IR is 4th largest Freight transporter is considered as Green Transporter due 2its reduced GHG emissions
