Madras HC raises question over Jaya's death the day Sasikala is made AIADMK chief

Chennai, Dec 29 (IBNS) : Calling it "doubtful," the Madras High Court on Thursday raised question over the death of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the day Sasikala Natarajn was chosen as the all-powerful Secretary General of the ruling AIADMK to succeed "Amma" in the top echelon of th party.

In what could spell a  political fallout and a commotion among the people, who had been into widespread speculations over the reason of Jayalalithaa's sudden illness and death, the High Court also  questioned why the body of the departed leader could not be exhumed.

Hearing a petition on Jaya's death, Justice Vaidyalingam said,  “Media has raised a lot of doubts and personally I also have doubts on Jayalalithaa's death.”

“When she was admitted in hospital, it was said that she was on proper diet. At least after her death, truth should be revealed,” he said.

Justice Vaidyalingam sought a detailed report on the matter.

Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5 was admitted to Apollo hospital on September 22 by her closest aid Sasikala Natarajan and her husband.

It was said she was suffering from  dehydration and fever.

Thereafter, Jayalalithaa was kept in the hospital for 75 days and the details of the prognosis and the treatment remained unclear to most of the people giving rise to various speculations, some implicating Sasikala and her husband.

It was alleged that even high dignitaries were not allowed to visit Jaya's cabin in the hospital while a chronological account of her condition remained under mystery with no transparent information being shared in public.

Sasikala, who assumed immense importance in the party with her backroom maoeuvres from Jaya's Poes Garden residence that she also made her home, asserted herself for the party's top post after the supremo's death.

She prevailed on top ranking leaders like present Chief Minister O Paneerselvam, a protege of Jaya, to back her case.

On Thursday, the AIADMK's General council meeting finally  decided to  confer the party's leadership on Sasikala by  making her the successor to  Jayalalithaa.

Natarajan, 54,  will take over as AIADMK  Secretary General on January 2.

The post has been lying vacant since the death of Jayalalithaa, who besides being the CM, held the party's top post till her death.

"Like we saw MGR (MG Ramachandran) in Jayalalithaa, we see Jayalalithaa in Sasikala,"  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said.

Panneerselvam is the first Chief Minister from AIADMK who will not be the party's  Secretary General.
